Lakes in the Asheville Area

Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake in North Asheville sits among one of the most popular neighborhoods in Asheville – Lake View Park. Non-motorized boating and fishing are permitted.

Enka Lake

Located in the Biltmore Lake neighborhood, Enka Lake is a beautiful 62-acre lake with hiking trails, a swim beach, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Enka Lake is a private lake, reserved for Biltmore Lake residents. Biltmore Lake is also one of the few communities close to Asheville that has waterfront homes and lots available. It is also one of the most amenity-filled neighborhoods in all of Western North Carolina, making it a very popular Asheville lakefront neighborhood. Biltmore Lake real estate for sale includes single-family homes, townhomes, and the occasional (but rare) vacant lot.

Lake Julian

Just south of Asheville in Arden, NC is Lake Julian Park. Lake Julian has a popular park on the lake’s north side, and fishing and boating are permitted (with electric motors only).

Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska sits in Haywood County, near Waynesville and Maggie Valley, North Carolina. This 200-acre lake is open to the public and is surrounded by the Lake Junaluska community.

Lake Louise

Weaverville, North Carolina’s Lake Louise is a popular recreation spot just south of downtown Weaverville. It is stocked with fish and there is a park and walking trail along the shore.

Lake Susan

Montreat, NC (just north of Black Mountain) is home to Lake Susan. Lake Susan is the smallest lake in this list, but it’s also one of the prettiest. It is stocked with trout and is a popular attraction for Montreat residents and visitors. There are no waterfront homes on Lake Susan, but almost all of the real estate for sale in Montreat is within walking distance to Lake Susan.

Lake Tomahawk

Centrally located in Black Mountain, NC is Lake Tomahawk Park. This is another small lake with a walking trail around the lake’s perimeter, a community park, fishing access, and spectacular views of the “Seven Sisters,” the mountain range that extends northeast out of the Town of Black Mountain. Real estate near Lake Tomahawk provides easy access to these amenities and is also conveniently located near downtown Black Mountain. 

Larger Lakes Near Asheville

If you’re looking for larger lakes or lakes that allow motorized boating and skiing, it’s worth looking into surrounding counties. Some of our favorite lakes are Lake James (near Marion, NC), Lake Lure, and other lakes used for hydro-power in our region. The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) and Duke Energy operate many dams in Western NC, and these lakes provide great options for recreation as well as lakefront real estate.

Lake James

One of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Western North Carolina, Lake James is fed by the Catawba River and the Linville River. Lake James is over 10 square miles in size and has over 150 miles of shoreline. There is a wide variety of neighborhoods on Lake James, including many that offer Lake James waterfront homes for sale. Some of the most spectacular lakefront homes in the entire state are located at Lake James. Many of these are new construction or have been remodeled with modern updates.

Lake Lure
